Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron gloriosum is a Colombian crawling Philodendron grown for large heart-shaped leaves with a velvety surface and pale venation. Its surface-running stem moves sideways across the substrate and produces one new leaf at a time from the active growing tip. A wide, shallow pot gives the stem room to advance while the root zone stays airy and evenly drained.

The creeping stem has visible internodes and persistent cataphylls, and it belongs at the substrate surface. Roots grow down into the mix while the active tip continues forward across the pot.

Philodendron gloriosum velvet leaves and crawling growth

  • Leaf shape: Broad, heart-shaped blades become larger as the creeping stem establishes.
  • Texture: The velvety surface gives mature leaves a deep green, matte finish.
  • Venation: Pale veins define the blade shape and become more pronounced as leaves harden.
  • Growth habit: A surface-creeping stem needs horizontal pot space and an airy substrate surface.
  • Family: Araceae.

How Philodendron gloriosum creeps across the pot

Philodendron gloriosum develops one leaf at a time from a crawling stem. The stem should stay visible on top of the substrate, with roots growing down into an airy aroid mix. Deep planting keeps moisture around the stem and increases the risk of rot.

As the stem advances, the plant builds a low, spreading shape with new leaves emerging from the active tip. A pot with open substrate ahead of the growing point supports cleaner growth, especially once the stem begins reaching the pot edge.

Care for Philodendron gloriosum crawling stems

  • Pot shape: Choose a wider pot so the creeping stem has room to move forward.
  • Stem position: Keep the surface-running stem visible and clear of wet, compacted mix.
  • Watering: Water when the upper 25–35% of the pot has dried, then let the surface settle before watering again.
  • Substrate: Use an airy aroid mix that holds light moisture while draining quickly around the roots.
  • Light: Provide bright indirect light to support broad leaves and steady growth.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity helps new leaves open with fewer tears or stuck edges.
  • Temperature: Keep it warm, ideally around 18–27°C, and protect it from cold draughts.
  • Fertilizing: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertiliser diluted below full strength.
  • Repotting: Repot when the growing stem reaches the pot edge or root growth has filled the container.
  • Propagation: Stem sections with at least one node can root in a warm, humid setup.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves at the base of the petiole and keep old, wet cataphyll material from collecting around the stem.
  • Mineral substrates: It can adapt to airy semi-hydro or mineral substrates if the creeping stem stays above the wet zone.

Philodendron gloriosum stem and leaf issues

  • Soft creeping stem: Check planting depth and moisture; the stem should sit on top of the mix.
  • Yellow leaves: Often linked to heavy substrate or overwatering around the roots.
  • Torn new leaves: Improve humidity and keep watering steadier while leaves are expanding.
  • Stalled growth: Check whether the growing tip has run out of horizontal space.
  • Pests: Check the undersides of leaves and the petiole bases for thrips, spider mites and mealybugs.
  • Leaf spotting: Improve airflow around the plant and keep the velvety leaf surface dry after watering.

Pet safety for Philodendron gloriosum

Philodendron gloriosum is toxic if eaten and can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Place it away from pets and wash your hands after handling cut or damaged tissue.

Philodendron gloriosum published name and etymology

The genus name Philodendron comes from Greek roots meaning tree-loving, a reference to climbing and tree-associated growth in much of the genus. Philodendron gloriosum was described by Édouard André and published in Illustration Horticole in 1876. The species epithet gloriosum means glorious or splendid, matching the broad velvety leaves and pale venation seen on mature plants.

Philodendron gloriosum brings a low, spreading growth habit together with large velvet leaves and bold pale veins.

Comfortable, Casual Summer Shorts With One Notable Weak Point
Color: Light Khaki, Size: XX-Large, Color: Light Khaki, Size: XX-Large
I selected these Men’s Cotton Linen Summer Shorts looking for something lightweight and comfortable for warm-weather, casual wear, and overall, they largely met my expectations. First impressions: Right out of the package, the fabric stood out. The cotton‑linen blend has a very nice feel — soft, breathable, and not stiff or scratchy like some linen blends can be. They have a relaxed, casual look that works well for everyday errands, hanging out at home, or a day at the beach. Fit & comfort: The elastic waistband with drawstring makes these easy to wear and forgiving in fit. The 7‑inch inseam gives them a modern, casual length without looking sloppy. These are the kind of shorts you can put on and forget you’re wearing, which is exactly what I want in summer clothing. Wash & care: After washing, the shorts came out nicely. There was no noticeable shrinking, and the fabric maintained its texture and shape. They didn’t wrinkle excessively and still looked good without needing special care, which is a big plus for casual wear. Concern: My one real concern is the zipper. While it works, it does not feel especially sturdy, and I can see it potentially becoming an issue with extended use. The shorts themselves feel well made overall, but the zipper seems like a weaker component that may impact long‑term durability. Overall: These are comfortable, breathable, and easy‑to‑wear summer shorts with a great casual look and a fabric that feels good on the skin and holds up well in the wash. If the zipper were more robust, they would be an easy recommendation. As they are, I’d still consider them a good option, especially if used primarily for relaxed, casual settings rather than heavy or frequent wear.

Light and airy!!!
Color: Coffee, Size: X-Large, Color: Coffee, Size: X-Large
These shorts are thin and airy perfect for hot weather not only do they have a button and drawstring but they also feature a zipper. I would not say that they are see through but be mindful that they are thin and in certain light u may be able to see through them if wearing darker undergarments. The shorts are very comfortable however they might run a bit small. With a nice steam and good lighting these shorts are very nice perfect to wear to the beach or hot climate vacation I think you will enjoy them and I would recommend. Good quality and value for your money.

Comfortable Cotton-Linen Shorts, True to Size and Breathable
Color: Black, Size: Large, Color: Black, Size: Large
These shorts are lightweight, comfortable, and have a relaxed fit that works well for casual summer wear. A size large is my usual size, and these fit as expected with no tight spots and no baggy crotch area. The 7‑inch inseam falls just above my knee and allows easy movement when sitting, walking, or bending. The fabric has a soft, linen‑like feel without being rough, and it is thin and breathable, which helps in hot weather. Because the material is on the thin side, I am glad I chose black; with a lighter color like white, I would be a little concerned about show‑through. The overall look is casual with a slight beachwear vibe from the drawstring and natural wrinkles. The elastic waistband is comfortable, and the drawstring goes all the way around the waist and can actually cinch for a more secure fit. There are two full‑size front pockets plus one open back pocket. The fabric content was not listed on the garment itself, so I am relying on the product description. After washing, there was no noticeable shrinkage. I air‑dried them and there were some wrinkles, so light ironing may be needed if you prefer a smoother look. For casual wear around the house, at the beach, for travel, or everyday errands, they offer good value.

Comfortable, Lightweight, and Perfect for Summer
I got these shorts for my husband, and he loves them. The cotton-linen blend is lightweight and breathable, making them perfect for hot weather, vacations, or just relaxing on the weekends. The elastic waistband and drawstring provide a comfortable fit, and the 7-inch inseam is a great length—not too short and not too long. They look casual but still put together, and the pockets are a nice bonus. They washed well and held their shape nicely. Overall, these are stylish, comfortable summer shorts that my husband reaches for often. Great value for the price!

Very comfortable and cool shorts
Color: Black, Size: Medium, Color: Black, Size: Medium
These cotton linen summer shorts are definitely "casual" shorts. Great for around the house, the beach, or hiking. I would not wear them out on a dinner date as they wrinkle quite easily. They are well made and comfortable. The stitching is nice and tight and there are no loose threads, so I feel they are durable. The Medium size was slightly snug, yet comfortable. The sizing chart recommended that I get Large and I think they would have fit better. These shorts are lightweight and keep you nice and cool. I do like that the back pocket has a button to help secure your wallet. The black color looks good with just about anything. I have a couple of very minor issues, but worth mentioning. The drawstring seems excessively long to me and gets tangled in the wash. Not a major concern, but slightly annoying. The other issue is the button and zipper. These shorts have a sturdy waist band as well as a drawstring, so why have a button and zipper? Possibly for aesthetic purposes? Overall, these are comfortable shorts that fit well and look good for casual shorts. They will keep you nice and cool. For the price, they are a good buy.
